The Temple Street Townhouses are located conveniently about one block from the administrative offices and two blocks from the theatre. The apartments have four bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, one kitchen, one common area/living room, and laundry facilities. The kitchen, the common area and a bathroom are on the first floor. There are two bedrooms, a bathroom, and laundry facilities on the second floor, and two bedrooms and a bathroom on the top floor. There are four apprentices in each townhouse.
Your basic bedroom setup comes with a bed, desk, desk chair, dresser and closet. The living area has a love seat, two chairs and a TV. There is a round table with four chairs in the common area, and basic kitchen appliances and settings in the kitchen. Hartford Stage provides you with a standing lamp in your bedroom, but you may want to think about bringing extra light.
No đ Sorry to tell you this, but the beds are pretty bad. Plan on bringing or purchasing a mattress pad when you arrive.
Krista DeVellis, your apprentice coordinator, will make sure youâre in an accessible apartment.
The Temple Street Townhouses, where you will be living, are called âstudent/intern housing,” but the residents can range from college/graduate students to full families. Some of our college-aged neighbors still like to party hard, and in the warmer months they will congregate in the courtyard after school and work. Donât be afraid to call security if theyâre being too loud.
It is located in downtown Hartford, which is an urban environment. You should take appropriate precautions, but the neighborhood is safe. The apartment complex is inside a gated area which you need a key to access.
While both the theatre and offices are within a short walking distance from the apartments, other amenities (grocery stores, Target, etc.) are best accessed by car. Parking is provided by Hartford Stage! The Technical/Scenic Arts apprentice, however, will need a car, because their work is at the scene shop which is a few miles outside of downtown (but arrangements can be made for a bus pass if needed).
As you probably know, a job in the theatre can sometimes mean extended hours, including the weekend. If youâre in a production department, youâll likely be working different, and sometimes longer, hours than your administrative peers, and be prepared for all those joyous occasions known as load-in, tech and strike. But donât worry, youâll still have time to run off to New York on some of your weekends.
Honestly, it does get tough sometimes – but because Hartford Stage provides housing and parking, it’s definitely better than it could be! Most of your stipend will probably go towards groceries. Several apprentices also choose to bartend and work Guest Services at the theatre (you get paid hourly in addition to your stipend!). As long as you pay some attention to how you’re spending, you should be okay. Administrative apprentices may be able to work weekends, but apprentices in the artistic or production departments will be pretty busy.
Besides Hartford Stage, there is TheatreWorks (we get comps!) the Bushnell Center for Performing Arts (we donât get comps!), beautiful Bushnell Park, and lots of fun bars and restaurants that you can check out for happy hours.
Comp tickets to all Hartford Stage productions, an invitation to all opening night parties, and the chance to work with award-winning actors, designers, directors, and other theatre professionals.
